DoH: Rabies cases lower by 5% this year

The Department of Health (DoH) on Wednesday, 13 July said the country reported a total of 157 rabies cases from 1 January to 25 June, five percent lower than the cases reported during the same period last year.,In 2021, there were 165 reported cases of rabies nationwide from the same period.,DOH said that most rabies cases were reported from Central Luzon with 25 or 16 percent; Calabarzon, 21 or 13 percent; Western Visayas, 17 or 11 percent; and Davao Region, with 16 or 10 percent.,Based on the agency’s latest National Rabies Data, 119 or most of the total caseload were not vaccinated with rabies immunoglobulin or rabies vaccine.,Category 3 is the highest exposure history among reported rabies cases comprising 112 or 71 percent of the tally.,It is defined as single or multiple transdermal bites or scratches, licks on broken skin, contamination of mucous membrane with saliva, and suspect contacts with bats.,Most of the rabies cases were due to biting animals; among rabies cases were dogs.,Out of the 157 biting animals in the reported cases, 77 or 49 percent were domesticated.,Of the domesticated biting animals, about 53 or 69 percent were unvaccinated for rabies.
