Vargas dethrones Magsayo in split decision

Mexican Rey Vargas dethroned Mark Magsayo via a 12-round split decision in their WBC featherweight title fight Saturday night (Sunday in the Philippines, 10 July) at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.,The scores read: 115-112 (Vargas), 114-113 (Magsayo) and 115-112 (Vargas).,Magsayo’s heartbreaking loss left the Philippines without a world boxing champion, following the defeats Jerwin Ancajas, Nonito Donaire and Rene Cuarto have suffered the past few months, and the stripping of John Riel Casimero’s WBO bantamweight belt.,Magsayo scored the fight’s lone knockdown in the ninth round with a solid right underneath Vargas’ jaw.,Vargas got up at the count of three by referee Jon Schorle.,But it wasn’t enough for Magsayo to successfully defend the WBC 126-lb crown he had won last January.
