One fantastic story after another, any careful reckoning now teeters on the edge of whether the suspect in Ateneo’s Sunday gun rage is, in fact, a well-meaning vigilante.,Perhaps one who delivered justice–deemed long overdue–with his own hands.,But Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission’s (PACC) recent chairman Greco Belgica belies gunman Dr. Chao Tiao Yumol’s accusations his office sat idly on his alleged drugs and corruption lead against Lamitan Furigays in Basilan.,“Lumapit ho ako sa opisina ni Commissioner Belgica dahil meron hong binitawang pangako ang Pangulong Duterte na tutulungan niya legally ang mga whistleblowers at mga nasampahan ng kaso dahil sa pagsusumbong sa gobyerno,” Yumol said in an interview with Maharlika. “Unfortunately, wala po akong natanggap na tulong para ma-avail ko ‘yung pangakong…immunity.”,In what authorities deemed “a determined assassination”, Yumol’s violent attack that skirted a tight Sona gun ban left three dead, including the alleged subject of his “grudge”, Lamitan ex-mayor Rosita Furigay, who was in the university to attend the graduation of her daughter wounded by the assailant.,“PACC’s mandate is clear…[It] can investigate only presidential appointees with Salary Grade 26 and above, such as regional directors, assistant secretaries, undersecretaries and secretaries,” Belgica said. “This does not include elected people, such as mayors and other local government officials.”,Despite the lack of jurisdiction over his case, Belgica said he helped Yumol out of mere desire for public service, propelling his complaint to, among others, the DILG, which, he said, issued a recommendation to the Office of the Ombudsman to file a corresponding case against the Furigays:,He said the office also ensured that Dr. Yumol was given a copy of the documents: “So, it appears that something is happening in his case.”,“Nakakalungkot na kailangan ilagay sa sariling mga kamay ang pagpatay o sa social media ang mga kasong nasa korte na. Assassination at character assassination ay parehong paglagay sa kamay ng batas dahil ayaw mag-hintay sa hatol ng korte,” Belgica said.,According to QC Police, Yumol’s record is marred with 70 cases lodged by Furigay, including multiple counts of cyber defamation, for which he rued want of government immunity.,Furigays’ court claimed Yumol’s diatribe started when a cease-and-desist order was issued to his clinic in Lamitan City.,Since his “exposé”, Yumol, meanwhile, alleged he was hounded by a series of death threats.,Under Furigay’s watch, Lamitan was a consistent recipient of the DILG’s Seal of Good Local Governance award for four consecutive years.
