Bolts keep Dyip winless

Meralco cemented its quarterfinal spot after zapping Terrafirma, 105-89, in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup Thursday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.,Chris Newsome was superb while Aaron Black and Allein Maliksi delivered an impressive performance for the Bolts, who sent the Dyip packing into the off-season without a single win in 11 games.,Newsome fired a team-high 19 points, six rebounds and five assists while Black and Maliksi chipped in 16 and 14 markers, respectively, to send Meralco to their seventh win in 11 games.,But regardless of the momentum, they got at the eliminations, Bolts acting head coach Luigi Trillo admitted they are facing another uphill battle while anticipating two possible quarterfinal scenarios.,With Meralco slated to grab No. 5, there is a big chance that it will be facing a familiar tormentor in Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in a best-of-three series in the quarterfinals.,The only way they could avoid disaster is if Magnolia loses its final game against Blackwater at the Big Dome on Friday, where the Hotshots will finish as the fourth seed and will book a quarterfinal duel with the Bolts.,But should Magnolia win and the Kings trounce Phoenix, who are playing at press time, Meralco will take the fourth spot, but will still face Ginebra at fifth spot.,Trillo knows that they have to be at their best against the Kings in the next round.,“What matters now is at least we solidified ourselves in a best-of-three. Who is it? We have to wait if it’s Ginebra or Magnolia,” said Trillo, who is likely to lead the team in the next round following the prolonged absence of tactician Norman Black.,“Both teams have champion coaches and heavy lineups. There’s nothing better than to be in a situation to compete, we are ready whichever team we face.”,Raymond Almazan keyed Meralco to the victory by firing 12 of his 14 points in the first half to gain a 52-41 advantage at halftime.,From there, it was just a matter of maintaining the lead for the Bolts, before Black nailed back-to-back baskets that gave them a 17-point cushion with only 2:52 minutes left en route to the easy victory.,Aldrech Ramos hit a game-high performance of 24 points and four triples, but it wasn’t enough as the Dyip failed to match the Bolts’ intensity., ,The Scores:,MERALCO (105) – Newsome 19, Black 16, Almazan 15, Maliksi 14, Quinto 13, Caram 7, Pascual 6, Hodge 4, Banchero 4, Jose 4, Hugnatan 2, Pasaol 2, Belo 0, Johnson 0, Baclao 0,TERRAFIRMA (89) – Ramos 24, Camson 14, Cahilig 13, Munzon 13, Gabayni 9, Calvo 5, Gomez de Liano 5, Tumalip 2, Javelona 2, Mina 2, Balagasay 0,QUARTERS: 27-16, 52-41, 73-65, 105-89
