Nothing is final yet on who among his colleagues would be the next Senate President in the upcoming 19th Congress, Senator Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara said.,However, Angara said he is expecting that Senate Majority Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri will be elected as the next Senate leader.,“The truth is, nothing is settled for the 19th Congress until we’re actually elected on the floor. Because the committee chairmen are elected by the Senate majority,” he said in an interview with One News.,“But I am hoping and expecting that Senator Zubiri will be the next Senate President, I think it’s a logical move for him and he’s very capable of performing that mandate, given that he was Majority Leader for several years,” he added.,Angara expressed his confidence that Zubiri will take up the most coveted position in the upper chamber since it was the similar path taken by his supposed predecessor — outgoing Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III.,“If you look at past Senate Presidents, a lot of them were also Majority Leaders like Senate President Sotto, Senate President Drilon, among others,” he added.,Zubiri is poised to be the next Senate leader after Sen. Cynthia Villar, who had also expressed her intent to lead the 24-member chamber, withdrew from the race.,Instead, the matriarch of the Villar-Aguilar clan supported the bid of Zubiri, who was said to believed have gathered enough votes from his colleagues to elect himself to the post.,Committee on Finance,Angara, the current chairperson of the Senate Committee on Finance, said he is still interested in leading the committee, citing his good performance in the 18th Congress.,“Yes, I am still interested because I am the current chairperson. I think I did okay in my past performance,” he said.,“I think I’d still do a decent job if I were elected to the position,” he added.,The lawmaker from Aurora disclosed that he is aware that Sen. Imee Marcos, eldest sister of President-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jr., is also eyeing for the same position.,“Actually, she met with me and Sen.Villar. I think a month ago, to express that she was interested in the position,” he said.,“I told her, let’s discuss it. Because again, it’s not my decision to make. I said, let’s talk with our colleagues and hear them out. I said, I am open to (relinquishing it)—because as I’ve said, we don’t own this panel. It is something that our colleagues have to decide on,” he added.
