Taiwan recorded 84,639 new COVID-19 cases and 59 deaths Saturday, the fourth consecutive day it has recorded more than 80,000 cases in a single day, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).,The number of cases, which included 84,587 domestic infections and 52 that were contracted abroad, were down slightly from the 85,761 recorded a day earlier, but the death toll tied for a single-day high since the current COVID-19 surge began in early April, CECC data showed.,The 59 people who died were in their 30s to 90s, the CECC said, and 56 of the 59 had chronic illnesses or suffered from severe diseases such as cancer, according to CECC data.,In addition, 29 of the 59 had not received any doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, while 16 had received three vaccine jabs, seven had received two jabs and seven had received one jab, CECC data showed.,The youngest person who died was a man in his 30s who had not received any vaccine jabs and had a history of cirrhosis of the liver, the CECC said.,The CECC also reported Saturday that 153 more people developed moderate COVID-19 symptoms and 70 more people developed severe symptoms.,Of the 1,129,202 domestic cases recorded in Taiwan from Jan. 1 to May 20, 1,867 have been classified as moderate infections and 617 as severe, accounting for 0.17 percent and 0.05 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data.,In all the other cases, the patients were either asymptomatic or had only mild symptoms, the CECC said.,On Saturday, New Taipei reported the highest number of domestic cases — 23,346 — followed by Taipei with 10,590, Taoyuan with 10,453, Taichung with 7,989, and Kaohsiung with 7,646.,Tainan reported 4,609 cases, Changhua County 2,808, Hsinchu County 2,472, Pingtung County 2,265, Yilan County 2,019, Keelung 1,757, Miaoli County 1,601, Hsinchu City 1,575, Hualien County 1,219, Yunlin County 1,128 Nantou County 924, Chiayi County 780, Taitung County 576, and Chiayi City 505.,Penghu County reported 184 cases, Kinmen County 135, and the Matsu Islands six.
