Galvez: Gov’t targets vaccinating 90% of students vs Covid

The government is eyeing to vaccinate 90 percent of the student population against Covid-19, vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr. said Thursday. ,In a radio interview, Galvez said the vaccination of students will be a preparation for the conduct of face-to-face classes. ,“This is what we really wanted, we want to vaccinate at least 90 percent of the students, so we won’t have any problems in the face-to-face (classes),” he said in an interview in Super Radyo DZBB. ,According to the latest report by the National Vaccination Operations Center, there are now a total of 2.46 million children aged five to 11 years old who are fully vaccinated. ,This is equivalent to 17.6 percent of the target population of the 14 million children who belong to the age group in the country. ,Meanwhile, there are 9.3 million children aged 12-17 years old who are fully vaccinated against the dreaded respiratory disease. This is equivalent to 81 percent of the target population.,Last week, the country’s pandemic task force expressed its support for the return of in-person classes in all public and private schools for basic education. ,However, acting presidential spokesman Martin Andanar said that Covid-19 vaccination will not be made a requirement for in-person classes.,Andanar noted that the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases instead “strongly encouraged” public and private educational institutions for basic education to undertake Covid-19 vaccination programs for their respective learners.
